Archive: Dusit D2

Today’s post comes to you from the Ultimate Thailand Explorers Blog Archive (originally published 1/4/2010). The Dusit D2 was one of the hotels we stayed at while in Pattaya. The Dusit D2 is by far, the best hotel I have ever stayed in (with the exception of the South African Game Lodges). What made it so special? Read the post to find out.

Archive: Underwater World, Pattaya

While I’m in Canada over the next few weeks I’ll be posting some blog posts from the Ultimate Thailand Explorers Archive. Today we’ll travel to Underwater World in Pattaya, Thailand (originally published 12/30/2009). It’s the local aquarium with an impressive underwater tunnel that stretches on forever.

Hey Explorers,

A Day in St. John’s, Newfoundland

IMG 0152 225x300 A Day in St. Johns, Newfoundland

Today’s post comes to you from the St. John’s Airport. My flight to Halifax has been delayed by about 50 minutes for de-icing (I forgot that planes have to do that in the winter), so I’m writing this post to pass the time away.

With the free time I had this morning, I took advantage of exploring this surprisingly wonderful city in Canada. After breakfast at the Kcafe, where I tried Toutons (fried bread with molasses or maple syrup), I left for a trip to Cape Spear. Cape Spear is the easternmost point in North America. You can’t get further east on the continent without needing a swimsuit! The scenery was spectacular. I learned that in the early summer, you can see icebergs that have broken off floating around Newfoundland.

An Update from Canada

Hey Adventurers,

Before retiring to bed tonight I thought I would share a few of the activities I’ve been up to here in St. John’s, Newfoundland in Canada. Once I return, I’ll have the complete coverage posted at adventureswithben.com.

All in all, things are going well. I’m off to Halifax, Nova Scotia today.

Canadian Province Count: 1

Traveling Through Canada

It’s travel season at work again and I’m traveling through 6 Canadian Provinces. I’m interested in discovering more about our neighbor to the north, but traveling in the winter has me concerned. Current temperatures are around 20 degrees Fahrenheit (wish it was Celsius). Living in Florida tends to spoil you weather-wise, especially in the winter. I’ve had to dig out all my winter hats, gloves, scarfs, sweaters and jackets.

Here’s my upcoming itinerary over the next few weeks…

  • St. John’s, Newfoundland
  • Halifax, Nova Scotia
  • Vancouver, British Columbia
  • Calgary, Alberta
  • Montreal, Quebec
  • Toronto, Ontario

2010 Website Progress

In late January I wrote a post sharing my goals for 2010 for adventureswithben.com. Progress takes time, especially when you’re working a full-time job, but I’m quite pleased with where I’m at to date. One of my goals has been completed (and in the process of being refined), and another is slowly emerging. Let’s start with the latter – networking with other bloggers.

Celebrating the Saints in New Orleans

It just so happened that my trip to New Orleans was planned a few weeks before the Saints were headed to the Superbowl. What a wonderful moment of serendipity; Being in the same city as a Superbowl Home Team on the night of the game! And even better, they won.

This was the first time that the Saints were in (arguably), the biggest event in American Culture. And while it uncertain if they would remain victorious, the mere fact that they were playing was enough. It seemed as if the party started as soon as you woke up. All around the city people were chanting “Whodat” – the Saints cheer.

Cultural Foods: Cafe Du Monde

I could use a beignet (Ben-Yay) right now. They look delicious don’t they? No trip to New Orleans is complete without a stop at Cafe Du Monde. They are located in several locations in Louisiana, but the original is where you need to visit. Located at the end of the French Market since 1862 – just across from Jackson Square, Cafe Du Monde makes for a perfect stop in the morning before shopping for breakfast.

The menu is fairly limited. Beignets, coffee, juice and that’s about it. But who needs anything else when you can have the most delicious powdered sugar donut in the world? Come enjoy a beignet (or three) with me…

Happy Mardi Gras!

IMG 0090 300x225 Happy Mardi Gras!

For the longest time I have always wanted to attend Mardi Gras in New Orleans. In fact, it’s been on my Adventure List for several years. And while Mardi Gras as it’s translated is Fat Tuesday, the revelry takes place over the course of several weeks in New Orleans.

Mardi Gras is a celebration of indulgence before the fast of Ash Wednesday. It’s a time to party it up. Virtually everyday throughout the City of New Orleans krewes (social organizations of people), host parades and parties where beads, coins, cups and other treasures are thrown to the masses. Fun for the young and young at heart, find a spot along the parade route and get ready to shout and cheer for those beads.

Sign Spotting in New Orleans

I’ve never been in a parking garage that has a bathroom. But that’s not what this sign means. Allow me to translate for you… “Don’t pee in this garage!”

WHAT?

Why would you need a sign for this?

The City of New Orleans has a very liberal open container law. And when ya drink a lot, ya gotta pee a lot. Yet despite the tolerance towards drinking, there is little tolerance toward public urination – and with good reason I might add. Many merchants post signs that say restrooms are for customer only. Or even worse, there are no public restrooms at all. So what’s a person who’s doing the tinkle dance to do? Enter the parking garage…
