Spotting Victoria Falls by Helicopter: What’s it Like?

I’ve always wanted to fly in a helicopter. It’s been on my adventure list for a long time. But to shell out $130 for 15-minutes of airtime… well it better be for something spectacular. Victoria Falls, one of the seven natural wonders of the world, has dozens of lookout points that offer breathtaking views. But to truly complete your experience, you need to see it from above.
I elected to tour with Batoka Sky. They are located in Livingstone, Zambia and offer helicopter and microlight tours. A microlight is a small, motorized flying lawn chair (okay, not a lawn chair, but close enough). Microlights allow you to fly real close to the falls, but you can’t bring a camera – just in case you drop it! A wing-mounted camera will take your picture for purchase afterwards.
A helicopter flight, on the other hand, will let you take as many photos and videos as you like, but you lose that intimate feeling of soaring through the mist. My decision? Bring on the chopper. This is one moment you’ll want to have a record of.
You have two options for your helicopter tour: 15 minutes and 30 minutes. They were about $130/$260 respectively. The more expensive option flies further up the Zambezi River. I chose the 15-minute tour and was not disappointed. I came here for the falls, not the river (besides, it’s better to tour the river by boat anyway). My investment was well worth it. See for yourself in this YouTube video. If you look carefully, you’ll see a microlight flying underneath the helicopter, the Victoria Falls Bridge (where you can Bungee Jump ) and wild elephants roaming the bush.
Sometimes It’s Worth Splurging
Victoria Falls is a once-in-a-lifetime trip. When you’re there, you’ll want to take full advantage of your visit. Seeing it from the sky enables you to see the breadth of the falls. It’s awesome, not in the sense that it’s “cool”, but in the overpowering feeling of a waterfall over a mile wide pouring millions of gallons of water over the edge. You have to see it to appreciate it.
