<p>The view as you approach the Batu Caves (no official homepage available) is unmistakeable. The limestone caves are home to a Hindu Shrine and are worthy of a visit outside of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia if only to see something strikingly different than what we have here in the United States.</p>

<p>The view as you approach the <a title="Batu Caves Wikipedia Article" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Batu_Caves" target="_blank">Batu Caves</a> (no official homepage available) is unmistakeable. The limestone caves are home to a Hindu Shrine and are worthy of a visit outside of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia if only to see something strikingly different than what we have here in the United States.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://adventureswithben.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/IMG_0034.jpg"><img class="aligncenter wp-image-8315" title="BenwithBatuStatue" src="http://adventureswithben.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/IMG_0034.jpg" alt="IMG 0034 Snapshots from the Batu Caves" width="432" height="576" /></a></p>
<p style="text-align: left;">At the base of the caves is a 140-foot statue dedicated to Lord Murugan, a Hindu Deity.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><img class="aligncenter wp-image-8314" title="BatuBen" src="http://adventureswithben.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/IMG_0032.jpg" alt="IMG 0032 Snapshots from the Batu Caves" width="576" height="432" /></p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Pace yourself as you climb onward. The stairs are steep. Every once in a while, be sure to stop and turnaround to see the city off in the distance.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://adventureswithben.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/IMG_5344.jpg"><img class="aligncenter wp-image-8316" title="BatuSteps" src="http://adventureswithben.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/IMG_5344.jpg" alt="IMG 5344 Snapshots from the Batu Caves" width="576" height="384" /></a></p>
<p style="text-align: left;">After 272 steps, you have reached the top entrance of the caves.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://adventureswithben.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/IMG_5356.jpg"><img class="aligncenter wp-image-8317" title="BatuLight" src="http://adventureswithben.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/IMG_5356.jpg" alt="IMG 5356 Snapshots from the Batu Caves" width="384" height="576" /></a></p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Once inside, you can explore at your own pace. There are caves tours with helmet lights, shrines to visit and rock formations to admire. The sculpting on the shrines is sometime to be admired. Every figure is highly detailed, colorful and they are plentiful.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://adventureswithben.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/IMG_5408.jpg"><img class="aligncenter wp-image-8318" title="BatuMan" src="http://adventureswithben.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/IMG_5408.jpg" alt="IMG 5408 Snapshots from the Batu Caves" width="576" height="384" /></a></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://adventureswithben.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/IMG_5509.jpg"><img class="aligncenter wp-image-8321" title="HinduGod" src="http://adventureswithben.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/IMG_5509.jpg" alt="IMG 5509 Snapshots from the Batu Caves" width="576" height="384" /></a></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://adventureswithben.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/IMG_5499.jpg"><img class="aligncenter wp-image-8319" title="BatuSilouette" src="http://adventureswithben.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/IMG_5499.jpg" alt="IMG 5499 Snapshots from the Batu Caves" width="576" height="384" /></a></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://adventureswithben.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/IMG_5475.jpg"><img class="aligncenter wp-image-8322" title="HinduShrineBatu" src="http://adventureswithben.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/IMG_5475.jpg" alt="IMG 5475 Snapshots from the Batu Caves" width="576" height="384" /></a></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://adventureswithben.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/IMG_5400.jpg"><img class="aligncenter wp-image-8323" title="BatuShrineGods" src="http://adventureswithben.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/IMG_5400.jpg" alt="IMG 5400 Snapshots from the Batu Caves" width="576" height="384" /></a></p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Of course, you can bring home your very own statue of Lord Murugan at the Batu Caves souvenir stand at the top of the caves.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><a href="http://adventureswithben.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/IMG_5352.jpg"><img class="aligncenter wp-image-8320" title="BatuSouvenirs" src="http://adventureswithben.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/IMG_5352.jpg" alt="IMG 5352 Snapshots from the Batu Caves" width="576" height="384" /></a></p>
<p>As you explore, do be careful of the monkeys that infest (and I do mean infest) the entire area. While they may look cute, they are vicious (check out more monkey stories from <a title="Monkeys at the Batu Caves Don't Ever Look Back" href="http://www.donteverlookback.com/2012/03/meeting-the-local-monkeys-at-batu-caves/" target="_blank">Don&#8217;t Ever Look Back</a>).</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://adventureswithben.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/IMG_5576.jpg"><img class="aligncenter wp-image-8325" title="Monkey Cracker" src="http://adventureswithben.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/IMG_5576.jpg" alt="IMG 5576 Snapshots from the Batu Caves" width="576" height="384" /></a></p>
<p>A culture of tourists hand feeding them food has taught them not to fear humans. They will run up to you and grab a bag of potato chips or fruit right out of your hand. Seriously! They also poop everywhere, so watch where you walk.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://adventureswithben.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/IMG_5562.jpg"><img class="aligncenter wp-image-8326" title="FeedingMonkeyCrackers" src="http://adventureswithben.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/IMG_5562.jpg" alt="IMG 5562 Snapshots from the Batu Caves" width="576" height="384" /></a></p>
<p>At the end of your trip, you should visit the food stalls in the parking lot and <a title="Cultural Foods: Coconut Water, Malaysia" href="http://adventureswithben.com/travel/interesting-foods-coconut-water-malaysia/">try some Coconut Water</a>. You drink the inside of the coconut directly from the coconut!</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://adventureswithben.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/IMG_5304.jpg"><img class="aligncenter wp-image-8327" title="LordMuruganStatue" src="http://adventureswithben.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/IMG_5304.jpg" alt="IMG 5304 Snapshots from the Batu Caves" width="384" height="576" /></a></p>
