Watch out Adventurers, those Drag Queens & Kings are fierce!

One of the events held at the Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras Festival is a Draq Race on Bondi Beach. Bondi Beach is one of the most famous beaches in the world and a must-see when in Australia. And if I was going to make a trip to the beach anyway, I might as well plan it on the day of the races, right?

What are the Drag Races exactly?

Simply put, Drag Queens and Drag Kings from around the world sign-up to compete against each other in funny, physical challenges on the beach.

Here are a few things to expect when attending this colorful and campy outdoor event.

Arrive Early

The event takes place in the late afternoon/ early evening – as the sun begins to set. Keep an eye out for the roped-off portion of the beach and that’s where you’ll find it. Crowds start to accumulate early, so I’d suggest staking your claim an hour or more before the event begins. You can either sit on the steps (see the photo background), or on the beach surrounding the event space.

My preference?

On the beach. Spread out on your beach towel, lather on your sunscreen, put on your best shades and enjoy the Australian sun while you wait. Oh and don’t forget to bring your speedo to erase those pesky tanlines (you won’t be the only one)!

In any event, get as close as you can for the best view of these zany events. I was quite surprised at the turnout of race, so if it’s on your list, allow for plenty of time to get there.

The Best Dresses, Mustaches and Crack

Along with a sharp-tongued wit, Drag Queens (and Kings) have the best costumes. They cover the whole spectrum of elegant to colorful, bold to simple and some are just a hot mess! You’ll probably see a crack or two too!

 Zany Events

 The competition is more spectacle than anything else (what else would you expect). It’s not about the athletic prowess. Events include a volleyball match and the Handbag Discus (above photo), where purses filled with sand have to be thrown the farthest. The high-heeled race in the sand is always a crowd pleaser as many a drag queen trips in those 6 inch pumps and lands face first onto the ground.

Let’s face it, you’re at one of the hottest beaches on the planet. Short shorts, bare chests and men (and women) everywhere! While the Drag Queens are the main attraction – the very attractive spectators (and there’s plenty no matter what team you play one) are just wonderful to gawk at!

The whole event is done in about an hour or so, and then the festivities continue. While the sun is setting stop by a local bar and chat with the contestants, or finish up that tan you’ve been working on. Or better yet, go home and get ready for a night in the city!
