 Marjon Katerberg: Sand Sculptor
UPDATE 4/7/09: The post below was a preview of the Art of Sand Festival. I did make a visit over the weekend and wrote about it here – in case you’d like to see what it was all about. Thanks for visiting! We’ll now return you to your regularly scheduled blog content.

I know it’s Tuesday and the weekend seems so far away, but you’ll want to block some time in your calendar for what looks like to be a fantastic event. I sure am!

I’m officially tired of winter. I live in Orlando, Florida; The Sunshine State. The state surrounded by beaches on three sides. I should have been to those beaches several times by now.
I haven’t been once.
Mother Nature gave us a bit of a reprieve this past weekend with a tease of warm weather. Many Floridians (including myself), took advantage of it by going to the 2010 Plant City Florida Strawberry Festival. I should hopefully have those posts published in the next few days.
But now I’m returning to the cold weather of Canada for week 3 of my 5 week adventure through the country.

I’ve been feeling ill the past few weeks. I have a cough and sore throat I can’t seem to get rid of. I’m thinking it’s related to the dry air of Oregon and Utah. The lack of humidity has dried my eyes and my throat. So over the weekend I needed some Vitamin D. I needed to relax, catch up on some sleep and breath the salty air of the ocean. A trip to Cocoa Beach was in order.

The launch for Space Shuttle Discovery was scrubbed and rescheduled for Thursday night. If Thursday shouldn’t work, Friday night is on hold for the last launch opportunity until October.
I’ve always wanted to watch a shuttle launch at night. I saw a daytime launch back in 2007 and was impressed (see the photo above). But a night time launch… everyone says those are even better. Space Shuttle Discovery’s planned launch is significant because this is the last scheduled night launch ever. The shuttle program is quickly nearing an end.

It’s the last Friday before the first day of school for students in Orange County, FL today. This officially marks the end of summer as they know it. Sure on the astronomical calendar summer still has another month, but according to the school calendar summer is done. In honor of the the back-to-school season I thought I would pay tribute to the summer destination of all carefree students: the Beach.
One of my favorite Florida Beaches is Miami Beach. It has a captivating energy that once you have been there, you’ll want to return again and again and again. Perhaps it’s the stunning Art Deco Architecture.

There are many ways to travel on an adventure. You could travel with friends, a loved one, on your own and with family. When I was in graduate school I decided to further my education career and apply to doctoral programs across the United States. One of these schools happened to be in California so I took a trip with my dad to visit the campus.
I’ve traveled frequently with both my mom and dad together, but not as often with just one family member. While our trip was mainly business, it was really nice spending quality time – just he and I. We had ourselves a free evening one night and went down to Santa Monica for dinner.

I hope Sunday’s post piqued your curiousity. The danger sign that you saw can be found on Maho Beach on the island of St. Marteen. Maho Beach is located at the very end of the runway for the island’s airport. And when I say the end of the runway, I mean the end of the runway. The only thing between the beach and the runway is a 2-lane road. This is one of the only runways in the world where beachgoers can get this close to landing and departing aircraft.

Don’t stand behind airplanes is the warning on this sign. You may be asking yourself, “Why would I want to stand behind a jet aircraft?” Well, some people enjoy standing behind jet aircraft. I actually went to a beach where lots of people stand behind jet aircraft. Myself included. I’ll tell you the story later this week.

You may have noticed today’s post has a topic: Sign Sunday. It’s been two weeks since I started posting and I’ve been giving a lot of thought to how to continually improve the content, layout and look & feel. Anticipate more changes in the coming months as I learn Photoshop and other graphics software. For now, one of the recent enhancements is Sunday’s regular column.

Do you ever have one of those days where you wish you could escape from the day-to-day tasks and just enjoy something else? That’s the kind of day I’m having today – and the kind of week I’m having. This is a crazier than average week at work and I could just use a breather. Fortunately the week is half over! Two more days and as luck would have it – I have a three-day weekend! The caveat is, I am working on Saturday next week so it’s not as much of a bonus as I thought. Nonetheless, I am wishing I was at the beach relaxing in the sand, worry free.
