7 Tips for Taking Kids to a Music Festival

7 Tips for Taking Kids to a Music Festival

I used to be a frequent music-festival attendee. Once I got married and had kids the festivals faded from my life. Recently my four-year-old son started taking guitar lessons and I thought he might be ready to appreciate a music festival.

My willing husband, my enthusiastic four-year-old and I descended upon the Winnipeg Folk Festival in early July. We had a great time and I learned a lot about how to enjoy a music festival with kids in tow. Here are my tips for making your own kid-inclusive music festival experience a great one for everyone.

Is the Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras Post-Parade Party Worth It?

Is the Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras Post Parade Party Worth It?

While the Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade is the highlight of the month-long festival, the after party is generally what everyone talks about. It is one of the largest dance parties imaginable. The event starts at 10 P.M. and lasts until 8:00 the following morning. That’s ten hours of non-stop dance! 15,000 people make their way to the party every year as a final farewell until next year’s celebration. But with ticket prices over $130 per person, is it worth it?

11 Tips for Watching the Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade

11 Tips for Watching the Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade

Wow! Only at Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras would you see a costume like this one! Earlier this week I shared what made this event a must-see for any traveler, regardless of their identity. Today, I’d like to share 11 tips to watching the parade…

1. Watch the Parade

Though Mardi Gras lasts from mid-February to mid-March, the capstone to the whole celebration is the Mardi Gras Parade. If there’s one, and only one event you should plan your visit around, it’s the parade (But with over 50 other events to choose from, it’s worth attending a few).

With the City of Sydney as a backdrop, the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras kicks off with Fair Day at Victoria Park. Over 70,000 people attend the day-long event located in the southwestern corner Sydney.

Fair Day is all about connecting with other members of the GLBT community and taking advantage of the beautiful, Aussie weather. Vendors pitch their tents and encourage you to join one the hundreds of social, cultural, religious and arts groups in the area. There’s a gay swimming team, gay rugby team, gay church groups, gay SCUBA Diving clubs, gay baseball leagues, gay cycling, gay political groups and pretty much gay everything. I couldn’t believe how many organizations existed in Sydney and the surrounding areas. There’s nothing this extensive in the United States.

An Overview of Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras

Hey Adventurers,

By intention, my Epic Trip to Australia last year, coincided with the World-Famous Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras. Attending this massive festival has been on my adventure list for years. YEARS! It’s the largest event in Australia. That’s right, the largest event be it art, sports, culture, music or anything else on the whole continent.

It’s certainly the largest GLBT (Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender) event on the planet and I would say, it rivals many worldwide festivals regardless of their focus. It contributes over $30 million to the State of New South Wales, drawing 1/2 million people to the City of Sydney for the parade alone!

As an adventurer, I’ve done some pretty adrenaline-inducing activities. From bungee jumping in front of Victoria Falls, walking with lions in South Africa, SCUBA Diving with Sharks in the Great Barrier Reef and (yes) eating jellyfish in Singapore, I’ve had my share of thrills. But one thing was missing from that list – Skydiving.

Skydiving is arguably the ultimate of adventure sports. And for many reasons, I always left it at the bottom of the adventure list.
