Eat This! An Amarula Chocolate Mousse Recipe

Eat This! An Amarula Chocolate Mousse Recipe

If you’re a long-time reader, you know that my absolute favorite drink in the world is Amarula (yes, I enjoy it even better than wine). I love Amarula so much, I’ve visited the factory in South Africa where it is made… twice. Furthermore, my house consists of Amarula:

  • Coasters
  • Playing Cards
  • Drinking Glasses
  • Bar Mats
  • Christmas Tree Decorations
  • and Empty Bottles with their iconic elephant

It’s a healthy obsession (let’s face it, I could be collecting troll dolls or some other crazy collection of tchotchkes). But back to the Amarula. If there’s anything that I love as much as Amarula, it’s chocolate. So when you combine them together, well I almost passed out at the marriage.

Cape Towns Steamboat Vicky: The Best $5 I Ever Spent

The Victoria & Alfred Waterfront in Cape Town is a bustling place. Shops, restaurants, entertainers and attractions all vie for your attention and dollars. If you’re traveling to South Africa, a trip to Cape Town is a must… and a stop at the V&A Waterfront is a necessary part of your itinerary. And if/when you do make it there, you can not pass up the opportunity to take a harbor tour on the Steamboat Vicky (only a facebook page is available).

Animals from the Mabula Private Game Lodge in South Africa

Today’s post includes photos from the Mabula Private Game Lodge. Just over 2 hours from Johannesburg, Mabula offers the convenience of a short drive from the city, but the immersion in an expansive animal reserve that includes the Big Five!

The thickness of the elephant’s skin helps protect it from the plentiful thorn bushes in the reserve.

Sure the big animals often get all the attention, but South Africa has some pretty awesome birds too – including this hornbill.

The Coolest Thing About South Africa Is This…

The Coolest Thing About South Africa Is This...

As a frequent traveler, I’m often asked what is my favorite country in the world. The answer is an easy one: South Africa. I’ve written more about South Africa than any other topic on this site.

What makes South Africa so special? Why do I love it so much? The photo above is all I need to say.

This is a photograph of an elephant in the Kruger National Park I took while I was driving through. It was that big, and that close to my car. No fences, no trenches, no chains, no barriers. Nothing.

Guest Houses in South Africa; The Way to Stay

Guest Houses in South Africa; The Way to Stay

If you only travel in the United States, chances are you stay at hotels. But if you’re traveling in South Africa (or anywhere for that matter), Guest Houses and Bed & Breakfasts are excellent alternatives. Here’s why:

Warm People

While traveling through South Africa, I stayed at many guesthouses. In Durban, it was the Burns Bed & Breakfast (shown above). I’ll never forget how welcoming Mike and Shelley Burns were during my stay. They greeted me on arrival, personally escorted me to my room and made me breakfast every morning.

[UPDATE 1/10/11 8:30 A.M. EST - There is a twitter account (possibly) established by Safari Par Excellence. Follow them at @SafParZambia Their name has been in the news, attached to the accident, but they book all kinds of African Tours, don't operate any of them. I think if they had a Facebook and Twitter account ahead of time, they could have minimized the press they are getting. A lesson to all companies out there - if you don't engage in social media, you'll regret it later when you need it.]

Zambian Passport Stamp

Last week’s post provided suggestions on gifts you could give the traveler in your family. But if you’re a traveler yourself, today I’m asking you to give back this holiday season.

Passports With Purpose

Passports With Purpose is a non-profit organization that gives back to the destinations travelers visit. Uniting travel bloggers from around the internet, last year they raised $64,128 to build houses in India. This year, they are partnering with Room to Read to build a library in Zambia, Africa – home to Victoria Falls, one of my favorite travel destinations.

Two Photos of South Africa in Two Seasons

The cooler weather has arrived in Florida and I’m reminded of Africa. You see, on my first trip to South Africa was during winter (summer in America). And I took a photo of this lonely tree. I loved this tree, because it was standing in a field all alone.

And then, 5 months later, it became summer in Africa (winter in America). And I took a photo of that same, lonely tree.

Watching the seasons change is one of those simple pleasures in life. Watching them change in another country is even better!

A Cute Photo of a South African Rock Dassie

I was recently reviewing some old photos and came across this snapshot of a South African Rock Dassie at Augrabies Falls National Park. I think it is by far, the cutest animal photo I have ever taken.
