Good news! Transportation in Livingstone, Zambia and Victoria Falls is easy. Taxi’s are the way to go. Here are all the essentials you need to know.
How Much Does a Taxi Cost?
All the taxi rides I took in Livingstone were un-metered. Rates were negotiated and agreed on before departing. Don’t be foolish and ride in a taxi without discussing price first!
Fares from Chanters Lodge (my home away from home) to Victoria Falls were $10 one-way. Fares to the Livingstone Museum in the Central Business District were $5.
Can you get cheaper taxi fares?
Maybe.

How much money should I bring to Victoria Falls?
This is a difficult question. In most of my travel experience, I always say bring little cash since credit cards are generally widely accepted. But in Zambia, U.S. Dollars seemed to be the preferred form of payment; Even over the Zambian currency, The Kwacha. I never saw the Kwacha if that tells you anything. But it’s about 5,000 Kwacha for 1 U.S. Dollar.

What hotels are in Livingstone, Zambia?
Sadly, with few exceptions, hotels in Livingstone, Zambia, close to Victoria Falls are expensive. Expensive enough to make you say “not this time, maybe someday.” And with tourism being a major driver in the economy, deals and discounts are tough to come by, even if you purchase a package deal.
Your big hotels are the:
While rates change seasonally, for the travel period I was looking at, rates started at $195/night (that’s U.S. Dollars kids) at the Protea Hotel Livingstone. And that was the cheapest of the 3!

Which Country to Fly Into?
If you’re considering making a trip to Victoria Falls, one of the first questions you’ll need to ask yourself is, “Which side of the falls should I visit? Zambia or Zimbabwe?” Your decision will naturally impact which airport you fly into: Livingstone, Zambia or Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe.
I chose to fly into Zambia. The recent instability in Zimbabwe’s political and economic fronts was enough for me to avoid spending my nights there. But no worries, taking a day-trip into the neighboring country to see the falls from the other side is easy, albeit a bit pricey.

Is Victoria Falls Safe?
On the whole, you’ll find Livingstone, Zambia to be as safe as any other city in Africa. Vic Falls thrives off of tourism, so you’ll find plenty of tourists at every major attraction in town. Even the solo traveler won’t feel alone. However, you may want to be aware of a few situations that may make you slightly uncomfortable.
