I love a good zoo, and the Taronga Zoo in Sydney provides the perfect opportunity to see Australia’s well-known wildlife if you didn’t have a chance to spot them in the wild (check out my tips for Koala Spotting along the Great Ocean Road). Today’s post is a photo essay from my day at the zoo. Enjoy!

The Taronga Zoo is just a short ferry ride from Sydney Harbor. Ferries run all day long, are reasonably priced and offer a great view of the harbor.

Keep your eye out for spiders on your walk to the main entrance. They are located everywhere. For those not wanting to walk the 15 minutes to the main entrance, shuttle busses are available, or you can take the cable car.

The zoo is undergoing a huge refurbishment, so we had to enter through a temporary entrance.

I was the first in line at the zoo.

This is the signature photo you have to capture at the zoo. The trick is to stand on a rock on the other side of the walkway to get both the Giraffe and Opera House in the same frame. Be patient.

Arrive early in the morning and head directly to the kangaroo and wallaby walkabout. You can get right up close to them. Later in the afternoon, as the temperature rises, they seek shade under the trees, making them unreachable to pet.

The cassowary bird is vicious and known to attack. Colorful, yet dangerous!

An aerial cable car connects the lower half of the zoo with the upper half. Use it for a quick entry or exit to the park. It’s located by the ferry boat dock.
