A Desert Hiking Tip You Probably Haven’t Considered
A desert hike through Joshua Tree National Park is a must-do while visiting Palm Springs. But hikers must take extra precautions to make sure they return safely. Sure the standard rules of staying hydrated and letting loved ones know where you’re going and when you’ll return is important, but another, is having a safe place to store your keys.
Many of the hikes in the park travel to remote locations. Cell phone service is non-existent and in many instances, you may not encounter any other people. So if you lose your car keys, you’ll be sitting out in the desert until another traveler wanders your way. And in the oppressive heat, this small frustration can quickly escalate to a serious emergency.
To prevent this from happening, I’d suggest investing in a pair of pants with zippers on the pockets…
The trusted pants I use for hiking are World Wide Sportsman Hiking Pants from Bass Pro Shops. On each of the side pockets there is an interior pocket with a zipper, the perfect size for keys and credit cards. By safely securing them inside, they won’t accidently fall out when I’m hiking or slip out of my backpack when grabbing a water.
