Adventures in Bowling

If you’ve been following my twitter account adventureswben, you may have noticed that I’ve been bowling on Saturday nights in a Bowling League at Colonial Lanes in Orlando. I’ve never done something like this before – and I’m glad I did it. I’ve compiled some observations of what I have learned from Bowling so far.

  1. The House Ball is Not Enough - The first week of bowling I saw all these bowlers throw their ball down the lane in a straight line, only to watch it curve at the very end to get a strike. Time after time they consistently curved their ball like magic. How did they do it? The balls the pros use is weighted. It’s slightly off-balance. This causes the ball to curve at the end of the lane. At some point I think I’ll need to upgrade my ball.
  2. Ask Questions and Take Risks – Each game I have been asking the opposing team on strategies for improving my bowling game. I still haven’t figured out how to use the arrows on the lane yet, but I have learned a bit about putting a spin on the ball and knocking down pins that are on the corner. If you want to be a good bowler, you need to learn from the good bowlers.
  3. Every Pin Counts - Last week I bowled a 138. I thought that was impossible. My average is 116. My best game ever was around 122. I had accepted the fact that I’l probably be a consistent 116 until I upgraded my ball. I was trying my hardest after all. Then by some struck of luck, and I truly do think it was luck, I bowled a 138 last week. My goal this past week was to bowl 140. That’s only 2 more pins better. The first 2 games were near to my average. The last game I bowled 150! It was unbelievable. Was seemed insurmountable, now became possible. To win at bowling you need to knock every pin down every time. Every pin counts.

19562056 300x225 Adventures in BowlingI originally joined this bowling league because Brian and I needed something to keep us busy on the weekend. At the encouragement of our friends we joined the league and I am so glad I did. I would never have done something like this on my own. Sometimes the motivation for our adventures comes from our friends and family. What could you be missing out on that you haven’t discovered yet? Challenge yourself to do something out of the ordinary. Do it one time and see what happens…
