SCUBA Diving in the Great Barrier Reef in Australia is on My Adventure List. With only 192 Days until I leave for Australia and to Cairns to tick this item off my list, I need to start preparing now.
All this week I’ve been taking online PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors) Courses in preparation for this weekend. Today officially starts my practical training in the water. I found a Dive Shop in the Orlando area to help me train. While I haven’t been in the water yet, I thought I would share with you some of the lessons and observations I’ve discovered while taking these SCUBA Courses.
- Never hold your breath underwater.
- SCUBA Diving requires a lot of gear – much of which is probably very expensive. I’ll be renting all mine for the time being.
- The deeper you dive, the less time you can spend underwater.
- It possible to dive in Arctic Waters – but you use something called a dry suit.
- Diving looks to be amazingly fun.
- Diving is expensive. The equipment alone will set you back a few grand.
- Florida has a ton of natural spring dive sites.
- Never hold your breath underwater.
- Divers have a Buoyancy Control Device (BCD) to help them “float” through the water. It helps raise/lower them.
- Temperature variations between different levels of water can be as much as 20 degrees Fahrenheit.
- You can go all over the world with your diving card; always a new adventure to explore
- Diving allows you to (and I quote): Meet People, See Places, Do Things (very specific)
- Never hold your breath underwater.
So there you have it. After about 7.5 hours of sitting in my office watching videos and answering test questions, Brian and I are going to dive in (pun intended). The only thing that concerns me, I may want to hold my breath underwater. I know I’m not supposed to, but it’s that same feeling that you have when you stand on the edge of a cliff. You know you shouldn’t jump, but something compels you to anyway.
Stay tuned next week for the full report. Or…you can become a fan on Facebook and stay up-to-date over this weekend’s adventures.
Have you ever SCUBA dived before? What advice would you give to a beginner? Share by commenting.
Today’s Lesson: Never hold your breath underwater. Your lungs could explode – seriously!
I’ll see you out there…! Or under there!
