Today, we’re going to go on a real game drive – not like last week’s drive on a golf cart! After boarding our land rover at theĀ Ivory Tree Lodge, we set out at dusk to search for game (game means wild animals). On our first evening game drive we had som spectacular elephant and white rhino spottings. But the real treat came later when our game driver brought us to three lionesses hunting zebra. Our guide said they were probably teenagers.
I was surprised that the zebra’s didn’t show any sign of alarm. You would think that if they saw a lion, they would immediately turn away and run. But animals are smarter than that. Throughout time, zebras have learned how fast lions can run. The zebras know that they are a perfectly safe distance from the lions. By the time the lions got up and started the chase, the zebras would be well ahead of them. So instead of worrying, the zebras kept grazing.
It wasn’t until the lions inched closer to the zebras that they slowly picked up and trotted off. Next time, the lionesses will learn to hunt in a not-so-open field – they’re still young. The element of surprise is important in the African Bush. Take a look at this YouTube video with some of the highlights from my game drive. You’ll see some amazing elephant sightings and the lion and zebra moment I described above.
