More than Sand Castles at Art of Sand Festival

This is one of my favorite times of year in Florida – Spring. Our cold snap is over, but it’s not ridiculously hot yet. It’s the perfect weather to go to the beach. And if a trip to Cocoa Beach is in the works, you may want to stop at the Art of Sand Festival and Exhibition at the Radisson Resort at the Port (where the Beach Line meets highway A1A).

Last week I gave a preview of the festival on this site. On Sunday I made a trip to Cape Canaveral to see the festival for myself. Organized by the Brevard Cultural Alliance, the festival invited nine world-class sculptors to transform a pile of sand…

…into a work of art.

Some tower over 15 feet high! They are incredible. These are not your standard beach sand castles. Each sculpture has a theme. Whether it be Dance by Marjon Katerberg,

or Music by Katsuhiok Chaen,

you’ll be in awe. Just take a look at the exquisite detail that went into Leonardo Ugolini’s Architecture sculpture.

Perhaps one of the most detailed and best sculptures at the festival had Ocean as the theme. It was of an octopus.

The artist was also on hand too!

Okay, so I cheated and used a form, but give me some credit. At least I shared my pail and shovel with the 5-year olds I kicked off the sand pile so I could make my sculpture.

For the amateur and professional photographer, the Art of Sand Festival should give you an hour of more of unique subjects and circumstances to take photographs of. For everyone else, a 30-minute stroll is plenty of time to admire the sculptures and browse the crafts for sale. To make the most of your visit, check the entertainment and event schedules ahead of time to extend your visit. Things were a bit quiet on the morning I visited. The weekend of April 16th is sculpting up (er shaping up) to be an ideal time to visit as a sand sculpting competition will be taking place on the piles of sand set aside.

For any other time, consider a trip to the Art of Sand before or after a trip to the beach for a truly sandy weekend. Sand Dollar coupons are available online for a dollar off the admission price. Print one out before you leave. Standard ticket prices are $8 for adults and $4 for seniors, military personnel and children under 15.

While I was photographing Damon Farmer’s Theater Sculpture one of the tour guides mentioned that his wife was unable to travel with him on this visit. So he sculpted her into the sand. What a lucky gal…I think?
