I’ll admit it, I’m a Big Mac Fan. I don’t eat them though. I’ve actually given up eating fast food altogether. The sodium, sugar, calories and overall bad-f0r-you-even-in-moderation characteristics of fast food was all the convincing I needed to stop. Yet every once in awhile I have a craving for a Big Mac: two all beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, pickles cheese, onion on a sesame seed bun. But I have self control and continue to drive by.
The only exception to this rule is when I travel to a new country. I always like to sample McDonald’s – to compare the international flavor with what I’m used to at home. Call it a vacation indulgence.
Over the weekend I took my first visit to McDonald’s in South Africa and ordered a Big Mac, Fries and a Coke; The classic American Meal. In fact, I’ve often wondered what food best typifies the United States of America. Every country has some sort of food that it’s best known for. I think the hamburger is it for America.
Back to the Big Mac…
It looked the same, smelled the same, felt the same and…
tasted the same!
That’s right, a Big Mac in South Africa tastes just like a Big Mac in the United States of America. Even down to the meat, sauce and buns.
That’s either incredibly impressive that McDonald’s can continue that same consistency throughout the world, or very eery and disgusting that what I’m tasting isn’t exactly real food but rather processed chemicals that can copy those classic flavors no matter where you are on the planet. I try not to ponder those things when I’m eating.
The french fries did taste a bit different, as did my Coke. Coca-Cola is not as sweet in South Africa as in the United States.
But the best part of the whole thing. If you order a large meal in South Africa McDonald’s will give you a free 2o10 FIFA World Cup Glass! Collect them all for a limited time only.
Fun McDonald’s South Africa Fact: The drive thru goes clockwise because South Africa drives on the left-hand side of the road!
