In yesterday’s post I shared 8 Reasons Why I Love Business Travel. Today I’ll share the opposite; 10 reasons why I hate business travel.
1. You Have to Work
That’s why you’re here in the first place! There’s no joyriding allowed. No getting up late. No staying out late. You’re up early delivering PowerPoint presentations, selling goods and services and networking. There’s no time to see or do much of anything. See #2.
2. Short Trips
Many business trips are too short to really see much of the place you’re visiting. Get used to being disappointed in leaving world-class cities and seeing nothing but the four walls of your hotel room.
Asking, “What’s the 1 Thing?”, one of my 9 1/2 Ways to Ignite Adventure in Your Life, helps overcome that feeling of seeing and doing nothing.
3. Long Trips
If it’s not a short trip, it’s a long trip. Being away from home is tough on you, tough on your family and tough on your friends. Those trips better be worth it!
4. You Have to Pack a Suit

Ugh, there’s no casual here. Business travel requires you to have to bring shoes, ties, jackets and pressed shirts. Nights are spent ironing in your hotel room. It’s so stuffy!
5. You Represent Your Company
Watch what you drink. Watch what you say. Watch what you do. Even when you are off the clock you’re still representing you’re company. Don’t do anything that could get you fired.
6. Brutal Schedules
Companies are trying to get as much done in as little time as possible. Days are long. Days are jam-packed with meetings and events. And you’re dashing in and out of airports. It can take a toll on your body.
7. Bad Food
Avoiding missed connections, working through lunch and waking up before the hotel restaurant is open all means one thing; You need to eat quick. Eating quick means finding fast food. High sodium, high calories and low taste. That’s why you’re looking forward to those fancy restaurants later.
8. Living Out of Suitcases
Packing and unpacking. Packing and unpacking. Never sleeping in your own bed. It’s not comfortable. You’re always on the go.
9. Life is On-Hold
When you’re on the road, you can’t get other stuff done. The lawn needs tending, the laundry cleaned and the car’s oil changed. When you are home, you have to spend your only free time catching up on all the work that was piling up. Not fun.
10. You are Often Alone
Many of my trips are done alone. If I’m lucky, I may have a travel partner. But there is no substitute to sharing the places you’re visiting with your friends and family. Sometimes you can bring them along, many times you can’t. When you have no one to share those moments with, you truly feel alone.

I’ll see you out there…!

[...] I’m on a business trip and in a cruel twist of irony, am taking up residence in Loveland, Ohio. Except there’s no love in this land for me. I’m generally fine with loneliness while on the road. In some ways, I enjoy the opportunity to be alone with my thoughts. But holidays make me yearn for being home with friends and family. That’s what holidays are all about, right? Business travel isn’t all that it’s cracked up to be. [...]
[...] app), of me unpacking the backpack at home. You can view it on my facebook page. Wearing a suit is one of the reasons why I hate business travel. But pulling the suit out of backpack is so much more hip and fun! I’d highly recommend it. [...]

Jaime,
Yeah there’s lots to hate, but sometimes the things I love, outweigh the things I hate. All a matter of attitude. Once you live the Business Traveler lifestyle – and the perks, going back to Backpacking is tough!
You hit all the big ones Luke! How do you cope with loneliness?

I’m always amazed that people think that business travel is all glamorous. You’re absolutely right!! It can be fun when friends come along but often times is lonely and takes me out of my routine with food, working out, and most importantly sleep!
