Well Adventurers,
My grand tour of Canada is officially over. I’m back home for a few short weeks until I’m off on my next adventure. For today’s post, I thought I would share with you some personal observations, discoveries and learnings from my trip through Canada this past February and March.
- Canadian Provinces Visited: 6
- St. John’s, Newfoundland
- Halifax, Nova Scotia
- Vancouver, British Columbia
- Calgary, Alberta
- Montreal, Quebec
- Oakville (Toronto), Ontario
- Airline Miles Accumulated on Air Canada: 19,209
- Never saw a Canadian Mountie
- Don’t think I saw a Maple Leaf either
- Canadians really do say “eh”
- About is pronounced “a boot”
- Canadians are friendly people
- You don’t have to take your sneakers off when you go through Canadian Airport Security
- Flights delayed by snowy weather: 2
- Winter hats are called “tuques” (sounds like two-ques)
- Virtually every business takes American cash, I never drew Canadian money
- Canadian money is given as change when you pay with American money
- Canada is cold in the winter
- Canada is a huge country
- The majority of Canadians live along – or close to the U.S. Border
- Canadians do enjoy hockey
- Maple syrup is best cultivated during alternating freezing nights and warm days
- Despite the myth created by the Canadian Pavilion at Epcot, Cheddar Cheese Soup was nowhere to be found
- Canadians put flavored salts on their popcorn – including Dill Pickle Flavor
- Every visitor to Canada must eat at Tim Hortons once
- Montreal is like being in a familiar, yet foreign country
- Having to check your carry-on roller board when returning to the United States Sucks
- Converting Celsius to Fahrenheit: Double the number and add 30
- Great hotel chain to stay at: Delta Hotels
- Cuba is a popular vacation destination for Canadians
- Screech is gross – but Screech-Ins are fun
- The timezone change in Newfoundland is 1.5 hours ahead of Eastern Standard Time
- While Canada is our neighbor to the north, it is a hidden gem with wonderful sights to see; plan a trip
So all in all, I have a new appreciation for Canada. It’s not the 51st State, but a unique country with it’s own: people, language, culture, foods and customs.

Hi Ben, Your very funny, I like your sense of humor. Thanks for the info on Canada, I’m hoping to travel there next year. I have a good idea what to expect from Canadians. Re money just had a similar experience in Cambodia, they only take US dollars but give you change in Cambodian money(riel).Very practical really over their, just don’t worry about the change.

Of course. We never did make it there for dinner, did we? Never had any bagels. I was just a smoked meat guy. Poutine… next visit. There’s something about the gravy that makes me queasy.
There are maple leafs on my mittens!!!!
Yes there are. I was hoping to see real leaves though.
