You may have noticed today’s post has a topic: Sign Sunday. It’s been two weeks since I started posting and I’ve been giving a lot of thought to how to continually improve the content, layout and look & feel. Anticipate more changes in the coming months as I learn Photoshop and other graphics software. For now, one of the recent enhancements is Sunday’s regular column.
It occurred to me while I was browsing my photos (all 19,913 of them), that I have a lot of photos of signs. Some of these signs are funny. Others are unique in that you wouldn’t see them in the United States, while others caught my attention due to their look or placement. Each Sunday I’ll post a new sign with a story behind it. Let me know what you think!
Today’s sign comes from Boulders Beach, South Africa. It’s next to Cape Town. Brian and I were on a trip to Cape Point on a recent visit and stopped at this beach along the way. Boulders Beach is famous for it’s penguin inhabitants. Pulling off into a small parking lot, visitors can walk a few steps towards the ocean and spot hundreds of penguins waking about.
Not all penguins are cold weather creatures as some would think. These African Penguins can tolerate the much warmer climates of the Atlantic Ocean. I learned this during a summer working at the New England Aquarium. They have a penguin exhibit that welcomes you once you step inside. If you’d like to learn more about these penguins, visit the aquarium website.
We spent about 20 minutes exploring the beach and saying hello to the penguins. Due to the many visitors that come to beach each year, they were open to having us approach them – but never close enough to touch.

They were cute as you can see from this photo of the penguins kissing. Many of them were resting in their nests, presumably keeping their eggs warm.
The sign at the beginning of this post was located in the parking lot. Penguins may sometimes wander under your car with devastating results if you don’t notice them. Before we departed we did our due diligence and checked underneath for the all clear.
Boulders Beach is a great diversion on your way to the Cape of Good Hope. Free and full of activity, be sure to check it out.
Have a great week of adventure!
