Somewhere in the publishing calendar you can look forward to a few series on how to manage your money. Can’t tell you when, but it’s in the queue. While adventureswithben.com is primarily a Travel Blog, I’m also very passionate about money: Earning it, Saving it and Spending it. The fact of the matter is, most adventures aren’t cheap. They cost money, and lots of it. If you’ve seen some of the costs of the places I’ve been your head would spin. The sad reality is, if travel is a priority in your life, you need to save your money and not spend it.
This year my tax refund was approximately $2000.00. There’s a lot one could do with that money. Here’s where it went…
$250.00 – Christmas Savings Account (The family deserve the best)
$250.00 – Vacation Savings Account (I deserve the best too)
$500.00 - invested in my Roth IRA (you should have one of those)
$1000.00 – Personal Savings Account (Just in case)
If you do the math, I didn’t spend any of my tax refund – at least not yet. There was no trip to the mall to treat myself to nice clothes. There was no dinner out on Friday night. I didn’t even take 5 bucks to buy a drink. It was as if the money never existed.
I’ve learned over the years that if you want to travel like I do, you need to save your money. It’s simple to say, but not easy to do. It takes a lot of discipline. But the good news is, once you have developed the skill, you spend less, save more and travel lots more.
So today’s lesson is: Save your money for travel (unless you have credit card debt – a topic for another day)
