Yesterday I shared who the winners and losers in travel for 2011 were. Today, I’d like to share some of my travel moments from the past year. Jeremy from Budget Travel Adventures invited me to participate in his blog-round-up: Best-Of-Travel for 2011. Here are the answers to this year’s questions.
Best Domestic Travel Destination 2011
Now I’ll admit that Vegas is not really my kind of city. The artificiality, the crowds, the prices and the non-stop focus on gambling is not my idea of a great time. But… it’s been over 15 years since I’ve been to Las Vegas and experiencing something new (or almost new) is always exciting. Nonetheless, I found a little gem in the Mac King Comedy Magic Show and scored an evening in the Bellagio Hotel for free while on a business trip.
Best Travel Experience 2011
There are few moments in a person’s life when they can truly say that they were a part of history, and that this part of history is really a significant moment. In June of this past year, the final Space Shuttle Mission, STS-135 lifted off from Cape Canaveral, FL. And as a member of the NASA Tweet-up, I was about as close to the launchpad as anyone else. It was fantastic and truly a highlight.
Best International Destination 2011
Without hesitation, Australia. Climbing the Sydney Harbor Bridge, SCUBA Diving in the Great Barrier Reef and Hiking around Uluru were all fantastic. You should plan a trip, despite the high costs of the country. And it’s worth repeating, I planned my trip to Australia waaaay before Oprah did.
Worst Travel Experience 2011
I have effectively ended many conversations by regaling others about the Sour Toe Cocktail. It’s a drink in the Yukon Territory featuring a real, mummified, human toe. It sounds worse than it actually is – but no one believes me. I’m not the only one either. Gary Arndt from Everything-Everywhere is also a proud, card carrying member. I’m member #43412.
Most Embarrassing Travel Moment 2011
There’s little that I get embarrassed about. Writing so often and so frequently, I’m accustomed to putting myself out there publicly. So I can’t say that I have an embarrassing moment. However, my review of the Clever Travel Companion, underwear with pockets, was quite salacious since I posed in the underwear I was reviewing. I’m sure in 30 years when I’m running for office this photo will come up again. At least my passport and cash will be secure so I can flee the country and hide when it happens.
Best Local Destination 2011
For the longest time, I’ve been wanting to visit the Silver Moon Drive-In Theater in Lakeland, FL. It’s about an hour from my house and is one of the few, cinemas of it’s kind in the United States. Complete with car-side speakers, a snack shack and a double feature, it’s the best $4.00 movie ticket in town.
Best Travel Lesson from 2011
Always buy the Excess Reduction when renting a car in a foreign country. Jump to tip #5 over at Landlopers to see why.

That’s very sweet of you guys.
Nice recap – I posted something similar yesterday, although I’m too much of a rebel to follow the established format. Those underwear are ridiculous, but now I think I might want some. And that sour toe post might have been the strangest thing I read this year. Well done!

The underwear are fun! And the toe is one of the best travel moments!
One of my fave travel memories was the flash mob in Orlando! Thanks to you!! Fun!!
That was an awesome time, wasn’t it? So great you could join in!
Vegas is probably my top destination of the year also. We just returned and had a great time, but it’s not the kind of place I have to go back anytime soon. Looking forward to more adventures in 2012!
What did you do in Vegas that made it so great?
Thanks for the nomination, Ben! I’ll post mine soon.
Great recap of your year in travel. You definitely had a great one!

Excellent!
I didn’t realize you had a TBEX moment like me where you took off your clothes! HA! Not sure I am quite ready to be the male model though.
You definitely need a lot this year and got to be a part of history. What a fantastic experience being at the final space shuttle launch. Interested journeys this year. I think I will skip the human toe cocktail but gladly will plan a trip to Australia for a future date!

I’ll do almost anything for a page view, hahahaha. What’s funny is my post on going to a nude beach is one of the highest hit EVERY DAY! The shuttle launch was great and you must go to Oz and drink a Toe Cocktail. Really, it’s not that bad.
I did go to a nude beach in Portugal and fully participated! I still get hits on that every day as well! No photos though

I’m tellin’ ya, sex sells! Everyone wants to lurk, but no one wants to admit that they secretly want to do it.
