Skinner Butte Park

It was a beautiful day in Eugene, Oregon. The kind of day you would want to spend outside. So that’s what I did. I took a trip to Skinner Butte Park on the recommendation of several Oregonians. Adventurers to the park have a choice; They can hike or drive to the top. I chose to drive.

From the top of the park you can look out over the city and see the Willamette River and surrounding mountains. This is the Oregon that I had aways pictured in my mind. My last trip was to Pendleton, Oregon which is a 3 hours drive East of Portland. It is very cowboy and Wild West-like. Eugene, is the quintessential Pacific Northwest Community.

I did some exploring while I was out there. There are a few trails at the top that lead to the bottom of the mountain. I also found a great tree to climb that I shared in yesterday’s post. While I was walking the summit (and it’s not that high of a mountain, more like a hill), I saw something that I have not seen in years…

…my first falling leaf. I have not seen autumn leaves in a long time. Autumn is my favorite season. I love the cooler air, the warmer clothes and the colors on the trees. Orlando doesn’t have an autumn season per se, at least the kind that I am used to.

Before I left the top to grab some dinner I found the local teen hideout.

The University of Oregon is the local sports team and nothing shows college pride than a giant O on the side of a mountain. On my way home I had to fill the rental car with gas and got a free University of Oregon Car Flag. Eugene loves their “O”.

Though my time was brief, I wouldn’t mind living in Eugene. Everyone who I have spoken to since my trip that has been there has shared the same opinion.

  • Hey Ben, We’re following your online adventures as you make your way through Oregon. Take some time and visit Salem, about an hour’s drive north of Eugene. We have a terrific downtown with lot’s of local restaurants and shops. You won’t be disappointed by our parks either. Just ask anyone you meet and the friendly folks here will point you in the direction of some great outdoor adventures.

Thanks Salem Man for the invitation. Unfortunately, the posts you read this week, were activities I did the week prior. I don’t always have the time to post in real-time. But next time I’m in Oregon I’ll try to make my way to Salem. Thank you for reading and commenting.
